What exactly is Hulu?

Geek Information, Home Life

huluThat is exactly what I asked myself when I heard someone talking about this new (well, not actually new) website called “Hulu“.

Hulu is a website that offers streaming video of TV shows and movies from NBC, Fox and many other networks and studios, some of which are now offered in high-definition. Research found that Hulu is a joint venture of NBC Universal and News Corp, with funding by Providence Equity Partners, which made a $100 million equity investment and holds a 10% stake.

What’s great about Hulu is that you can access any of this content on demand, at any time.

To enjoy videos at Hulu, you will need the following software installed on your computer:

  • Internet Explorer 6.0 or above, Firefox 1.5 or above, or Safari 2.0 or above
  • JavaScript and Cookies must also be enabled
  • Adobe Flash Player 9.0 or above
  • Microsoft Windows XP SP2, Microsoft Windows Vista, Macintosh OS X or Linux

Other than that, it’s pretty simple – oh yeah, you also need a high speed connection… Check out Speedtest to see if yours is up to snuff.

If you are running Vista through your PC, you are also lucky – someone who frequents the Green Button has developed a plugin for Vista that will integrate with Hulu called SecondRun. Although it is in Beta, it is still pretty damn cool.

I may dump cable TV after this! Who am I kidding, cable TV ain’t going anywhere (yet)…

Are you a Hulu user?

I apologize; Hulu is a hyperlink above – had you clicked on it you would be directed. Nevertheless, here is the link – http://www.hulu.com, and yes, it is free.

Perhaps in the future I will add the website url after the names in parenthesis…
